On Sunday, 4/17/11, I curated a memorial tribute to Penelope Fitzgerald, featuring novelist Jonathan Franzen and New Yorker critic Joan Acocella, at KGB Bar, 85 East 4th Street in Manhattan, NYC.

Readers included:

Joan Acocella, New Yorker critic, author of TWENTY-EIGHT ARTISTS AND TWO SAINTS
Ellis Avery, novelist, author of THE TEAHOUSE FIRE
Rena Fogel, fiction writer, one-time student of Fitzgerald's at Queens Gate School for Girls
Jonathan Franzen, novelist, author of FREEDOM
Kerry Fried, critic and journalist
James Marcus, journalist and translator, author of AMAZONIA
Marie Mockett, novelist and blogger, author of PICKING BONES FROM ASH
Cassandra Neyenesch, fiction writer and art critic

The New York Times called Fitzgerald "the mistress of the hint of the sublime." To say nothing of her excellent reviews and biographies, Fitzgerald's fiction is sly, strange, delicate, tender, and pitiless. It's also oddly-- and darkly-- funny. During the Second World War, the inspiring BBC director of HUMAN VOICES absent-mindedly gets into what he thinks is a taxi at the end of a day, and inadvertently detonates the bomb that kills him. The great passion of the Romantic poet Novalis's life is Sophie, a girl whom everyone else-- the reader included-- sees as a none-too-special twelve-year-old.

I was inspired to organize this event because Fitzgerald is one of the writers I most seek to emulate. As a writer of historical fiction, I probably do as much research as she did, but how does she manage to wear her learning so lightly? I still haven't pulled off the trick of distilling a six hundred page manuscript into one of her two-hundred page books.

I was grateful, too, for the opportunity to introduce Fitzgerald's work to new readers because, first, she is a largely unsung genius in the U.S., and because, second, as the late twentieth century canon solidifies, I'd like to do my part to ensure we hear some top-notch women writers among the sung. And because, third, as A.S. Byatt asks, "She is, isn't she, the best?"
